Moments later, a dark-haired, man-shaped figure broke from the tree line stepping into the water, and then a few more appeared. Looking back at them the whole time, eyes wide with fear.
More than two decades later, the witness still remembers those eyes most of all — not a monster's, but something startled, caught off guard, and just as afraid as she was.
